Church’s litter pick cares for Cheltenham’s streets

At the end of Gold Cup Week, a team from St Matthew’s and The Minster in Cheltenham walked the streets to pick up litter.

As part of the churches’ Eco Church group, 14 wonderful and willing volunteers gave up their Saturday morning to help clean up our church parish following Gold Cup race week.

Rachel Hargreave, Operations Manager at St Matthew’s and The Minster, says, “We were thankfully blessed with good weather for the morning! For the first time, we decided to recycle as much of the rubbish as we could. This was a great success, as we managed to recycle about 25% of the plastic, bottles and paper we picked up. We also had a guest appearance from Orinoco (the Womble) and as we posed for a photo Alex Chalk MP rode past on his bike and stopped for a chat.

“A huge thank you to all who helped either set the event up or gave up their time to pick up litter and clean up our town. It is sad that it needs to be done, but do pray that each time we do the event we pick up less litter.”

If you’re inspired to do something with your church to care for the environment, you might want to get involved with the Great Big Green Week which runs from 8 to 16 June.
