Matt Round, Chaplain at All Saints Academy, described the experience as “a powerful reminder of the importance of service, cultural understanding, and building global connections [which gave] a renewed sense of purpose in our own lives.”

On the trip, the students and staff visited several schools in the region, where they met with other students, teachers, and local educational leaders. Matt said: “It was inspiring to see the passion and resilience of students who, despite limited resources, approached learning with remarkable enthusiasm.

“The language barrier was initially a challenge, but through smiles, gestures, and some creative teaching methods, we were able to connect on a deeper level, exchanging knowledge and learning from one another.”

They also met with church leaders, engaging in discussions about faith, service, and the role of education in the community. The students saw how the church serves as a foundation for social change, and they learnt more about the ways in which the church supports educational initiatives and infrastructure projects. Matt said: “Our time spent in the diocese deepened our appreciation for the power of faith-based community service.”

The trip was a cultural experience too, where the staff and students explored the rich cultural heritage of Tanzania.

Matt reflected: “We visited local markets, tried traditional Tanzanian foods and participated in cultural events that showcased the vibrant music, dance, and storytelling traditions of the region. We experienced the warmth and generosity of the Tanzanians everywhere we went, making us feel very welcome.”

There is an exciting opportunity to visit DWT next year, with plans being organised for a trip in May 2025. The trip has three main goals, these being: to have time with students and staff at the Theological College; to encourage partnerships between schools; and to make contact with Mothers’ Union representatives. The visit will be led by Alison Dight.
