St Cyr's StonehouseNew plans unveiled to revitalise St Cyr’s Church, are designed to secure its future and enhance its role at the heart of Stonehouse.

The proposed improvements include the creation of a new glazed entrance lobby, step-free access throughout the building, and the installation of accessible toilet facilities. Plans also include a new open-plan kitchen, improved heating and LED lighting, flexible seating, updated audio-visual equipment, and the creation of a meeting space within the church.

The project will be delivered in two phases, with phase one estimated to cost £350,000. The church already has £130,000 in its reserves allocated for the project, with a blended funding approach being planned, combining grant applications with local fundraising efforts.

The plans were unveiled at a launch event on 15 April, attended by community members, partner organisations and supporters. Speakers highlighted the challenges currently facing the building, including limited accessibility, outdated facilities and a lack of flexibility for modern use. While the building is capable of welcoming large numbers of people, it does not have the infrastructure to support them effectively.

The project has already received strong backing from community groups, including those involved in the Stonehouse Canal Festival, Cotswold Boatmobility, the Cotswold Canals Trust, local schools and music groups, all of whom see the potential for the church to play an even greater role in the life of the town.

DAC and the Care of Churches Team have been advising the PCC and supporting their ambitious proposals throughout the process.

Chris Amys, Churchwarden at St Cyr’s Church, said: “We believe this project is essential for the preservation and enhancement of our historic church. It has been a cornerstone of our community for generations, and these changes will help ensure it continues to serve as a vibrant centre for worship, community life and outreach for years to come.”

The Revd Dave Bishop, Vicar of St Cyr’s Stonehouse, said: “St Cyr’s Church is not just a historic building. It’s a living church at the heart of Stonehouse. This project is about making sure we can offer a truly open and welcoming space for everyone, whether they come for worship, community events, or simply a place of peace and reflection.”

St Cyr’s Church, a Grade II* listed building with origins dating back over 800 years, has long been a focal point for the town. Situated alongside the restored Stroudwater Navigation, it plays a central role in community life, hosting events, festivals, concerts and activities for local groups and visitors alike.

Organisers are now inviting the wider community to get involved, whether through donations, volunteering, sharing expertise or helping to spread the word.
