Bishop Michael was enthroned as the 40th Bishop of Gloucester in Gloucester Cathedral during May 2004.

Formerly, he was Dean of Derby. He is the author or editor of fourteen books on theology, liturgy and spirituality. As a member of the Church of England Liturgical Commission from 1986 to 2001, Michael Perham also played a major part in the production of the Church of England's Common Worship.

He was born in 1947, and is married to Alison, a palliative care specialist. They have four daughters.
