Bishop Rachel looking seriousBishop Rachel shares the following message ahead of Prisons Week.

This Prisons Week, I invite you to join me in prayer. There are excellent resources available to support daily prayer on the Prisons Week campaign page, as well as a powerful and poignant four-minute film. I warmly encourage you to make time to watch it.

As we continue working together to place the child at the centre of our culture as we to live out our vision of LIFE Together, I want to draw attention to the fact that so many adults in prison have experienced a high number of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). The impact of crime is not confined to victims and offenders; it ripples through families and communities, often with profound and lasting consequences for children.

There is also a powerful 12-minute film on the website of a charity I have come to know well, Children Heard and Seen, which supports children affected by parental imprisonment.

During Prisons Week, perhaps we might pray especially for the children and families affected by crime and the criminal justice system. We can also be curious about where these children and families are within our own communities, not least in our schools. At the same time, we can recognise that our commitment to the flourishing of children, young people, carers and families can be life-transforming, both in the present and in the future, as we share the love and hope of Jesus Christ through who we are and all that we do.
