Tewkesbury Abbey has brought one of England’s most famous historical stories to life with a new exhibition featuring a full-size printed reproduction of the Bayeux Tapestry.

‘From Conquest to Kingdom – The Bayeux Tapestry and Norman Heritage Trail’ opened to the public on 22 October. Visitors can explore the story of the Norman Conquest in 1066, when William the Conqueror invaded England and defeated King Harold.

An exhibition with the original tapestry in London has been hugely popular, and Tewkesbury Abbey is bringing the tapestry’s remarkable story to visitors across the South West.

The tapestry, which is 70 metres long, explores how the Norman Conquest changed England, telling the stories of kings and queens, faith, power, architecture and everyday life.

The exhibition was celebrated at a special opening evening on 21 October, bringing together guests from the worlds of history, heritage and the Church. Those attending included broadcaster, author and historian Dr Janina Ramirez, Jane Parsons from the British Museum, and the Reverend Canon Nick Davies, Vicar of Tewkesbury Abbey.
