Faithful Generations fun day

Grandparent and grandchildEveryone and especially people of grandparent age and the children they care for are invited to St John Baptist Church in Cirencester for an afternoon of intergenerational exploration, creativity, and reflection.

The event on 28 February is themed ‘pass it on’, celebrating how God’s love and faith are shared between generations. Families can expect a wide range of activities designed for all ages, including:

  • A treasure hunt, where children collect a ‘gift box’ filled with symbols of the Christian faith, from rainbow stickers and wooden doves to small Jesus figures.

  • A silent disco, bringing music, movement, and fun into the church space.

  • Sensory activities, including lavender bag making and gingerbread decorating, designed to engage memory and reflection across generations.

  • Prayer spaces – including the prayer chapel which will remain available throughout the afternoon for quiet reflection – and Godly Play which offers gentle, interactive ways to explore Bible stories.

“The activities are designed so that everyone can experience the building in a new way, and notice how it points to God’s love and presence,” said the Revd Jo Wetherall, event organiser and Senior Children and Families Connector. “They are meant to show that it’s not just another building, but a building that can speak about our faith to us.”

Faithful Generations is flexible, free of charge, and open to everyone. Attendees can drop in at any point, stay for the full afternoon, or combine the event with a day out in Cirencester. People can choose to book on for the event online, or they can just turn up on the day.

“The event runs from 12pm to 4pm, but people can come and go. They could go and explore the Old Department Store and the Grace Network, our diocesan partners, as part of their day, as well as exploring Cirencester,” Jo said.

The church itself is bright, welcoming, and fully accessible, with step-free entry and accessible toilets. While Faithful Generations is not a catered event, Cirencester offers plenty of cafés and places to eat, and families are welcome to bring their own food. There are good bus links into Cirencester town centre for those who use public transport.

“It’s special to take Faithful Generations into a new space, work with the team from Cirencester Deanery, and see what new conversations and experiences emerge. Activities are designed to engage the senses, spark reflection, and create lasting memories across generations,” Jo said.

Faithful Generations is open to anyone on their faith journey, whether they are familiar with church or exploring faith for the first time.
