Sharing faith at Valentine’s, by The Revd Sonya Newton

A heart, drawn with a crayon on a piece of paperIf you need an excuse, then surely Valentine’s Day is the perfect excuse to share the love of God through his son Jesus.

In past years I’ve given out wooden hearts or hung them on a tree on my driveway for people to take, they had messages written on them of God’s love and blessing.

This year I’m still going to do the hearts; they seem to work well, people like to receive them and have shared them on social media too.

I want to take things a step further though. Whilst chatting with people is my day job, I have several people in the local community that I feel I know quite well but haven’t yet had a chance to have a deeper conversation with them. I usually see them when they are busy, at school or work, so I think I’m going to write some personal note cards to give to certain people, offering them the chance to meet up and talk more about faith in Jesus.

Who would you write to? What would you say?

We often fear a negative response. I know I do, I enjoy getting on well with people and I value relationships. However, a well-intentioned card offering an opportunity for a cuppa and a chat won’t hurt anyone. If they refuse or don’t respond, that’s fine. It shouldn’t affect the relationship if we respond well to their refusal. It won’t help being short with them or stopping spending time with them, just because they don’t want to chat about Jesus, and we feel a bit uncomfortable. If we did that, we wouldn’t be responding like Jesus, would we, and they certainly won’t come to us in the future.

Be bold, what could you do this Valentine’s Day that would work in your street or with your friends? How could you share some of Jesus’ love this Valentine’s Day?
