Job Description – Project Manager

Contract: 30 hours per week, fixed term for up to 26 months but to end 31 October 2028 Start date September 2026.

Salary: £28,000 per annum (equivalent to £35,000 full-time per annum)

Reporting to: Operations Manager

Based at: St Mary de Crypt Church, Southgate Street, Gloucester with some work offsite for research and networking purposes.

Job purpose

As Project Manager of the Tudor Wall Painting and Sanctuary Project, you will work closely with the project team, volunteers, contractors and student placements to ensure the project runs effectively to time and budget, working to the agreed frameworks of the schedule of works, activity plan, and interpretation plan.

You will oversee the management of conservation work and development and implementation of new interpretation.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Project Management

  • Provide full support to the Sanctuary Project Board in overseeing the project.
  • Lead on the preparation and management of project management plans, programme timetables and risk registers, sharing with the Board in advance of meetings.
  • Monitor progress against key milestones.
  • Manage the project budget, monitoring expenditure and advising of any issues.
  • Advise the Sanctuary Project Group of any foreseen issues, risks and opportunities.
  • Maintain records of all project related correspondence.
  • Working with the Operations Manager, co-ordinate grant drawdowns and monitoring reports.

Project team

  • Work closely with the Operations Manager on project reports and claims to The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
  • Work collaboratively with the project team to ensure you feed into each other’s work to ensure programmes of work are carried out smoothly and effectively.
  • Line manages and works closely with the Heritage Activity Co-ordinator to ensure the programme ofactivities feeds into conservation and interpretation, and vice versa.
  • Line manages the Multi-Channel Marketeer Apprentice and work closely with them and theOperations Manager on the creation of marketing and digital content.
  • Commission and manage the work of the Project Evaluator.

Conservation schedule of works

  • Work alongside the church architect to commission specialist conservators to undertake conservation work, ensuring they are suitably qualified.
  • Ensure work is carried out to plan, time and budget.
  • Co-ordinate all external contractors onsite and ensure full compliance with HCS and access for other church users.
  • Act as a conduit between conservation contractors and the wider project team (Heritage Activity Co-ordinator and Multi-channel Marketeer Apprentice) to carry out agreed commitments for the activity plan e. hard hat tours, specialist talks, and digital content.

Interpretation

  • Lead on the commissioning of heritage interpretation contractor/s to undertake interpretation development, design and installation ensuring they are suitably qualified.
  • Act as a conduit between conservation contractors and the wider project team to feed into interpretation development and design.
  • Ensure work is carried out to plan, time and budget.
  • Lead on the commissioning of an artist to recreate the Adoration of the Magi, as it might have looked, for interpretation purposes.

Student conservation placements

  • Lead on the recruitment and induction of student placements from the University of Lincoln and Courtauld Institute and co-ordinate their accommodation.
  • Lead on the recruitment and induction of student placements from The Crypt School.
  • Liaise with conservation contractors to ensure all conservation placement students have been given relevant training, including health and safety.
  • Support students for the duration of the placements.
  • Ensure that student placement demographic data and placement hours are regularly collected in line with GDPR regulations for project monitoring and evaluation purposes.

PERSONAL SPECIFICATION

Essential experience

  • Proven track record of project management in a heritage context.
  • Experience of working on projects funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
  • Experience of working as part of a team.
  • Experience of working in partnership with multiple stakeholders to develop and deliver shared goals.
  • Experience of managing and supporting volunteers, especially young people.
  • Experience of different approaches to evaluating activities as part of a wider project.
  • Experience of working to deadlines and managing budgets.
  • Experience of working with historic buildings and understanding the issues around their care.

Essential skills / knowledge / qualifications

  • Relevant qualification and/or a minimum of two years’ demonstrable experience managing heritage projects to completion.
  • An understanding of funding bodies and how they operate.
  • Robust knowledge of evaluation frameworks and reporting.
  • Knowledge of the principles of interpretation and interpretative devices.
  • Ability to cultivate and maintain strong working relationships both internally and externally with proven skills in working with a broad range of stakeholders.
  • Highly organised and flexible with experience of managing complex workloads, budgets and competing deadlines.
  • Outstanding communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Excellent computer skills including the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Able to work well independently and under own initiative.
