Eco Church: Lifestyle

Recycled bagAs we reflect on our progress towards an Eco Office Silver award and beyond, we now focus on the Lifestyle category.

The Lifestyle category recognises that the environmental impact of our work is not confined to the office or church building. Instead, it is amplified – or limited – by the everyday choices we make at home and in our personal lives. The Lifestyle section of the Eco Church Survey encourages us to think about how sustainable living becomes part of our shared culture. It is less about formal policies and more about habits, encouragement, and community norms.

At Church House, we have been making an effort to promote thoughtful conversations about caring for creation, and how it connects with daily discipleship. One simple approach has been sharing regular sustainability prompts in staff communications. These short tips highlight achievable ‘eco swaps’ colleagues might try at home – from energy awareness to more thoughtful purchasing habits. The emphasis has been on encouragement rather than pressure.

Travel is another key area. The Diocesan Staff Travel Policy encourages staff to make environmentally conscious travel choices, following the Energy Saving Trust’s Sustainable Travel Hierarchy. As the policy reminds us, the greenest mile is often the mile not travelled, prompting reflection on whether a journey is necessary before setting out.

Additionally, we have moved our web servers to a provider powered entirely by renewable energy, helping to reduce the digital carbon footprint of our work.

Here are some ways to begin engaging with the section:

5 minute challenge: Notice one routine habit today – perhaps your commute, lunch, or shopping – and pause to consider one small way it could become more creation-friendly. Offer that reflection to God in prayer.

30 minute challenge: Share one simple eco lifestyle idea in your church notices, staff update, or group chat this week. Keep it realistic and encouraging.

Half a day challenge: Review the Lifestyle section of the Eco Church Survey with your team or PCC. Identify one or two practical actions you could encourage across your community this year, and consider how you will celebrate progress together.
