Trinity provides 120 Bibles to local school with diocese grant

A child reading Holy Trinity, Cheltenham has used a diocesan Mission Grant to buy 120 Bibles for pupils at Holy Trinity Primary School.

The church applied for the grant specifically to buy Bibles for children in Years 3 to 6, aiming to support collective worship and RE lessons. They will be given to the pupils in September.

Lucie Hill, Senior Pastor at Trinity Cheltenham, said: “Currently, the pupils are using Bibles that have an extremely small print. The school has a worship group, which includes two children from each class in Years 3 to 6, and they meet up weekly to organise and lead a worship session in their classrooms. The Bibles make it difficult for the group to plan together.”

The new Bibles are intended to be visually and practically accessible, and more engaging for the pupils to study from.

“Every child will be using the same Bible, and they will be easier to read. They will be a consistent resource across the school and will be used regularly in RE lessons.

“The Deputy Headteacher plans to have Collective Worship at the start of the new school year, where children will bring their new Bibles and read from them together,” Lucie said.

Pupils will be encouraged to write notes and highlight verses during their time at school, and they will be able to take their Bibles with them when they finish.

Lucie said: “Currently they get given a bible at the end of Year 6, but they will now have the chance to take home their own copy that they’ve already been using.

“I’ve been a teacher for many years and I’ve visited many school settings – I’ve personally not seen a Primary school use Bibles in this way, with everyone having their own copy. We’re hoping and praying that these bibles will be kept and used for years to come after they leave school. They’ll be able to see their highlighted verses and written notes that will hopefully encourage them and remind them of a particular lesson or collective worship.

“I have still got my bible from when I was in senior school and there is something special and nostalgic about having your Bible from when you were a child.”
