Bishop Rachel reacts to the findings of the HM Inspectorate of Prisons’ annual report published today (Tuesday 10 September 2024).
“I welcome HM Inspectorate of Prisons’ annual report published today. As Anglican Bishop for Prisons, I am deeply saddened by the findings: a lack of purposeful activity, increase in drug use, deterioration in living conditions and a lack of preparation for release across the male estate does not serve our communities well.
“With prisoners being released today under the early release scheme, this report highlights the lack of rehabilitative work in prisons which leaves prison leavers ill-equipped for reintegration back into society.
“My hope and prayer is for reform in our prison system so that it can fulfil its purpose and prevent the revolving door of reoffending.”
