Bishop Rachel shakes hands with HRH the Princess Royal outside Gloucester CathedralOn Monday 8 May, we welcomed HRH The Princess Royal to a special service of thanksgiving for our local volunteers at Gloucester Cathedral.

The service was held as part of The Big Help Out, a nationwide initiative to raise awareness of volunteering throughout the UK, in celebration of King Charles III and Queen Camilla’s coronation.

This service gave thanks for the work of the many volunteers across the city, county and diocese who devote their time and energy towards helping others.

As part of the service, volunteers were interviewed by Bishop Rachel and Bishop Robert, with performances from young people at The Music Works, one of the Bishops’ charities for 2023. One young man performed a spoken word piece highlighting the impact of knife crime.

HRH The Princess Royal spoke with many of the volunteers, representatives of local charities, choir and Cathedral clergy and staff.

She was presented with a posy of flowers and a ‘Coronation quiche’ made in the Monk’s Kitchen cafe, as she prepared to depart.
