Training as a Reader in the Diocese of Gloucester has recently seen some important and exciting changes.
The initial training period with our training partner, Cuddesdon Gloucester and Hereford, has been cut from three years to two years. Trainee Readers meet one evening per week at St Mary de Crypt Church in Gloucester, where they study interesting and challenging topics such as the New Testament and ‘Mission and evangelism’. They also have two residential weekends per year at Cuddesdon College, Oxford.
Following the two-year initial training, students are licensed by the Bishop at the annual Reader and Lay Ministry Licensing Service. During their initial year in ministry, new Readers will receive additional support from their incumbents and further training from the diocese, related to their individual vocation and their local parish context.
Once fully trained, Readers may be active in many ministerial roles. Some Readers focus on teaching the faith or leading church services, whereas others focus more on pastoral or pioneering ministries.
