Remembrance Sunday takes place this Sunday 10 November, and churches across the country are having services to remember those who served and sacrificed in times of war.
You can find details of your local services at www.achurchnearyou.com but you can find a few of the options from different areas below.
Cheltenham
St Peter’s Church Leckhampton
Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial (Church Road) at 9.30am, led by the Revd Gary Grady. This is followed by Family Communion at St Peter’s Church at 10am, which includes a reading of the list of the names of the fallen, and a playing of the Last Post and Reveille.
Cirencester
St John Baptist Church, Cirencester
A service at the church at 9.40am, followed by a service in the market place at 10.50am.
Forest South
Cinderford churches (St Ethelbert’s Littledean, St John’s Cinderford, and St Stephen’s Church Cinderford)
Remembrance services throughout the day, starting with a morning service at the Triangle at 10.45am, and finishing with two afternoon services at 3pm, one at Littledean Memorial and one at Hanover Court.
All Saints’ Blakeney Church
Service at the church War Memorial at 11.15am with the Ven Catherine Dobson, Archdeacon of Lynn preaching. The Royal British Legion is inviting attendees to join them at Blakeney Harbour Room for refreshments after the service. The service will be live-streamed on YouTube if unable to attend in person.
Christchurch and English Bicknor Church
Holy Communion service at 11am at Christchurch with a two minute silence. This is followed by an evening service at Christchurch with the Berry Hill Band at 6pm, with wreath laying at the war memorials inside the church.
Gloucester City
Gloucester Cathedral
Remembrance Sunday Choral Eucharist at 10.45am, and a special Remembrance Sunday County Service at 3pm in the Nave of the Cathedral.
St Barnabas Church, Gloucester
Service at 10.30am, joined by uniformed organisations who will be helping to lead their worship.
North Cotswold
St Peter and St Paul Church, Northleach
Service in the market place at 10.50am, followed by a civic service at the church.
All Saints Church, Turkdean
Matins and Holy Communion at 10.30am led by the Revd John Hollows, with Theo Mountford at the organ. There will be no choir as they will be on duty elsewhere, but there will be a selection of hymns. It is expected that the service will be the first time that the church uses their new halo infra-red heating system. Coffee will be served in the Nave after the service.
Severn Vale
St Andrew’s Churchdown
Remembrance Sunday Parade and Service instead of the usual Sunday service.
At 10.45am, there will be a parade around the war memorial outside St Andrew’s Church, honouring those who have served in the Armed Forces, especially those with life-changing injuries. There will be local uniformed organisations and a contingent from Imjin Barracks, with Major Rhett Parkinson RE as guest preacher. They are then going into the church for a service after the 2-minute silence at 11am.
Stroud
St Cyr’s Church, Stonehouse
Remembrance café on Saturday 9 November from 10am to 12pm. They invite you to bring homemade refreshments to share with friends, whilst remembering a loved one and lighting a candle. They will be supporting the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.
Tewkesbury and Winchcombe
Tewkesbury Abbey
Civic service of Remembrance at 10am, followed by Act of Remembrance at the cross.
Woolstone with Gotherington and Oxenton parish
Rededication of the Gotherington war memorial, to celebrate the completion of phase 1 of the memorial’s restoration work. This will be led by the Revd Ben Williams, starting at 10.30am. Jon Greenall will be in attendance for the re-dedication service, as his great, great grandfather Albert Agg was a key member of the original team who constructed the war memorial in 1921.
This will be followed by the Remembrance Day service at 10.55am. There will be a collection for SSAFA (Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association: the Armed Forces charity).
Wooton
St Mary’s Church, Thornbury
Civic service at 10.30am with representation from many local services, such as RBL, local Scouts and Guides and Cadet services.
Sodbury Vale Benefice will remember the fallen in their regular services on Sunday 10 November. At 3pm, there will be a Civic Remembrance Service at Chipping Sodbury War Memorial, with the Revd Chris Butler, Revd Jane Jones-Williams and others. At 4pm, there will be an Evensong for Remembrance Sunday at St Adeline’s Church, Little Sodbury, with Revd David Powe.
