Bishop Rachel has hosted a Great Get Together, aiming to give people opportunities to reflect on the things that draw us together and the things that separate us.
The Great Get Together began in response to the tragic murder of Jo Cox MP and has grown into a nationwide celebration of connection, community, and togetherness. Over the past ten years, millions of people across the UK have taken part in street parties, community picnics, runs, coffee mornings, and other local gatherings, all inspired by Jo’s belief that we have more in common than that which divides us.
Guests to the university were invited to sit with new people and reflect on a series of images placed on each table. These sparked conversations about belonging, division, and hopes for the future, encouraging honest discussion as well as shared understanding.
Bishop Rachel said, “At a time when so many people are feeling discouraged by the division they’ve seen in communities across the UK over the last few weeks, we want to keep sharing stories that remind people of something else too: connection, kindness and community.”
The gathering also highlighted ongoing work to strengthen cohesion locally and nationally, including the work of the Jo Cox Foundation and wider efforts to listen to people’s experiences and build a stronger sense of community.
