Bishop Rachel’s statement on the ceasefire-hostage release agreement

Published: Thursday January 16, 2025

I am extremely glad to hear the news of the ceasefire-hostage release agreement. Whilst there is still a long way to go it shines some light in the darkness for hostages, their families and communities, and for the people of Gaza. The trauma cannot be underestimated, and it is important that we continue to pray and raise our voices to work for justice, equity and dignity for all people across the region. In the immediate present there must be the distribution of sufficient aid in Gaza and this involves the protection and support of UNWRA’s work. Furthermore, the welcome news today must not detract from the situation in the Occupied Territories of the West Bank, and I will continue to pray and use my voice to keep on bringing their experiences of injustice and discrimination into the light.

Amid the welcome news of the ceasefire and hostage release, it is important for us to recognise the reality that the existing tensions, conflict and pain remain rooted in years of history and not simply in the abhorrent events of October 7th 2023 and the despicable destruction of Gaza  – our prayers, engagement and voices are much needed.  I give thanks and pray for all those charities, organisations, and individuals who continue to work for healing and transformation across the region.

As we continue to pray for all people in the Middle East, for the implementation of the ceasefire-hostage deal, and for peace and justice to break out in deeper and long-term ways, let us continue to pray particularly for Archbishop Hosam and our Christian brothers and sisters who so often feel unseen.

‘The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.’ John 1:5
