Worship Leader Training – Gloucester City Deanery
The Worship Leaders Course from the Diocese of Gloucester offers lay people the chance to gain formal training before receiving permission to lead Services of the Word and all-age worship. It’s a great way to serve your church community, enabling collaborative and intergenerational leadership, and ensuring services can still happen when clergy aren’t available.
The course is a mix of practical learning and exploring what worship means, drawing from the Bible, the rich traditions of Christian spirituality, and contemporary experience. The course covers:
- The essentials of leading public worship
- How Anglican liturgy works
- The role of music in worship
- Creating meaningful all-age and intergenerational worship
- Preparing and delivering a short Bible talk
- Growing in confidence to lead and encourage others in worship
- We’ll also create a space where we can learn from and encourage one another, so it’s a great opportunity to build connections and share ideas.
The course will be hosted by the Revd Dr Joe Mottram and team at St Philip and James Hucclecote.

To join, you’ll need to chat with your incumbent and get the agreement of your PCC. They’ll want to have a sense of how you might serve your church through worship leading. You’ll also need to complete safeguarding training, ensuring our churches remain safe and welcoming spaces for everyone. A key part of the course is a meeting with your incumbent to reflect on how your ministry might develop.
