Christian Aid Restore campaign: workshops and webinars
The International development agency asks people to back new global call for debt justice. Christian Aid is calling for change to the unequal global debt system which robs millions of families of the chance of a better life.
A series of workshops and webinars have been organised to give people more information on the issues and on how they can join the movement.
The charity was one of the founding members of the Jubilee 2000 international movement which won $130bn of debt cancellation owed by 35 of the poorest countries.
Christian Aid and its supporters are now urging the UK Government to tackle the twin issues of global debt and the climate crisis which are still trapping millions of people in poverty.
Jennifer Larbie, the charity’s Head of UK Advocacy and Campaigns, said:
“For too long, the UK Government has backed the world’s biggest polluters and greediest corporate lenders, fuelling the climate and debt crises, and leaving communities struggling for survival.
“Weather has become more severe and erratic which means crops are failing and people are struggling to feed their families. On top of this, many at risk of climate disasters are also in a debt crisis; debt payments prevent governments from addressing their citizens’ basic needs or responding to the climate crisis.
“But it doesn’t have to be this way. The UK is uniquely placed to act. It has the power to confront polluters and lenders who are driving the climate and debt crises. Cancelling debts and forcing polluters to pay for the damage they’ve done would provide governments with more resources to spend on health and education, help communities recover from climate disasters, and build resilience against future shocks.
“We look forward to welcoming supporters to these online gatherings where we will be able to offer information, and hopefully inspiration, on this vital work to restore creation and to see the flourishing of all people.”
