‘Antiphony’ art exhibition

The Friends of St Mary the Virgin, Hawkesbury, are delighted to announce ‘Antiphony’, a new exhibition by three graduates of the 2025 Fine Art MA at Bath Spa University: Sally Jones, Philip Ringland, and Lindsay Woodman.

This unique collaboration brings together works that engage in dialogue with one another and with the architectural, historical and spiritual significance of St Mary’s Church. Conceived through a form of call and response, the artists respond to the church not simply as a backdrop, but as a lived and meaningful space shaped by human history, religious ritual, materiality and the natural environment. Antiphony invites visitors to experience the church in new ways and to open conversations between place, history, faith, memory and imagination.

We are always looking for new ways to bring more people to enjoy this fabulous setting and I am sure visitors to Antiphony will be intrigued and uplifted by what they find here.”

• Private View: Friday 17 July, from 5pm to 7pm
• Opening Day: Saturday 18 July, from 10am to 5pm – refreshments served
• Family Service: Sunday 19 July, from 10am to 5pm – with talk and art activities for children
• Exhibition continues until Friday 24 July, from 10am to 5pm daily

Children’s activity sheets will be available throughout the week. Visitors are welcome to bring a picnic and enjoy the art, the historic church, and the beautiful Cotswold countryside.

Entry to the exhibition is free. Donations to the Friends of St Mary’s towards the upkeep of this Grade 1 Listed building are gratefully received.

Sally Jones is a visual artist whose work explores the intangible energy of light and colour. Exploring the qualities of materials that hold, transmit or reflect light, she creates vibrant sculptural works that reimagine the physical energy of light.

Philip Ringland is a multi-disciplinary artist and sculptor. His drawings and 3D sculptural forms, which use clay and found objects, are inspired by architecture, history, politics, and his love of story, to explore ideas of migration, transformation and identity.

Lindsay Woodman is a multi-disciplinary artist working across video, projections, words installation, and scent. She creates immersive works that integrate moving image, sound, touch, and smell to evoke sensory and emotional experiences.

The Friends of St Mary’s was formed in 1980 by people who care deeply about the beauty and tranquillity of the church and its grounds.. As a Grade One listed building, St Mary’s requires constant care and attention. Our aim is to ensure that visitors and parishioners can appreciate St Mary’s for years to come.
