What training do I need to complete?
The Diocese of Gloucester continues to work toward ensuring a church which is safer for everyone. Effective safeguarding learning is one of the key means by which we will become a safer church.
To ensure that all of our churches are safe place of worship, there are a number of roles that require the completion of safeguarding training. To understand which courses are required for each church role, please click on the links below:

This is an excellent online introduction to safeguarding training. It covers the basics of safeguarding and enables someone to understand the connections with the Christian faith and the Church’s ministry.

This online module builds on the Basic Awareness module and the aims are “To enable learners to contribute to, and implement, good safeguarding practice within church and community contexts.”

This course is aimed at those in a Leadership role. Clergy, Licensed Readers and Parish Safeguarding Officers should complete this training. It is also required for those in specific leadership roles in a parish setting. Please refer to the tick document. This is a course taught over zoom or face to face, and requires pre work to be completed.
The Church of England’s National Safeguarding Team have developed a new version of the Leadership training, which replaces the version that has been running nationwide since 2020.
This course is aimed at those in a Leadership role and promotes a learning journey for participants. Clergy, Licensed Readers, Safeguarding Officers should complete this training.
The Virtual Safeguarding Leadership Learning Pathway requires pre-course work to be completed. The reason for this is that the Pathway encourages participants to engage in a process of reflective learning. The pre-course work should take approximately two hours.
This training is completed via a learning management system called Moodle where workbooks, coursework, Zoom links, case study and certificates are accessed.
- Go to the CofE Training Portal
- Register or login on the portal if you have not already done so (if you have already completed Basic and Foundation training, you will already have an account on the Portal). You will need your previous username and password.
- Click on ‘online courses’ where you will see the ‘All Courses’ screen.
- Click on the Courses tab/Core Pathways/Leadership to reach ‘Gloucester’
- Click on ‘enrol me’, then we will email you as soon as possible to confirm your enrolment. Can you please also ensure you add details of your role.
- Once you have received confirmation, log back into the portal and Click on ‘Preparing to Learn’
- Click on ‘choose a learning group’ – choose the dates that suits your diary, make a note of the two dates and times (we offer Zoom and Face-to-Face training)
- Click on ‘Preparation Task’
- Complete the written and reading tasks listed on this page at least five days before Session 1 to allow the trainer to read these. Once you have completed all the sections, use the button ‘submit’ to finish this section, you will not be able to join the first session until this is done. Please complete the questions in the correct order, the system will not let you go back to a question.
- Join the first session on the date you have chosen using the button with the Zoom link shown on the portal or attend the first Face to Face session you have booked.
- Join the second Zoom or Face to Face session on the appropriate date/time.
- Complete the final evaluation within 1 month and ‘submit assignment’
- You will receive an email to say that your certificate is available in your profile once the Tutor has marked all parts of your participation as complete.

This online training is for all line managers in a parish, diocesan, Cathedral with responsibility/ involvement in recruitment.
It is also recommended for anyone with a pastoral role in worshipping communities.If you have experienced domestic abuse, or feel you would find this course difficult, please do speak with your Parish safeguarding officer/ incumbent or the Diocesan safeguarding team. We can support you and offer an exemption for the course.
Mental Health First Aid England (MHFA) is an internationally recognised training programme, enabling participants to learn more about Mental Health First Aid, to contribute to a positive workplace culture and reduce stigma relating to Mental Health.
Through the courses, participants will gain the skills and confidence to spot the triggers and signs of mental health problems and be able to contribute effectively to reducing stigma.
Those who complete the MHFA two day course are certified by MHFA as Mental Health First Aiders. We can offer to deliver the courses either online or face to face.
We offer the two day adult and youth courses and 1 day and half day adult courses.
