Donkey joins Palm Sunday procession

There was a very special guest at St Lawrence, Barnwood this Palm Sunday. She had four legs, a gentle nature, and plenty of charm.

Wilma the donkey made her debut at St Lawrence, Barnwood, bringing something entirely new to the church’s celebration.

The morning began with a relaxed ‘meet and greet’ in the church courtyard, where Wilma got to meet members of the worshipping community.

Wilma then took the lead, guiding the congregation on a joyful procession around the churchyard and along Church Lane. More than 100 people followed, waving palm crosses in their hands and singing favourites including ‘Hosanna’ and ‘Give Me Joy in My Heart’.

Many of those who came to see Wilma stayed on for the rest of the service inside the church, where the Revd Laine Lewis helped everyone explore the meaning of Palm Sunday in a simple and engaging way, using the word ‘PALM’ to highlight its themes: Promises, Arrival, Loving, and Messiah.

Katie Davies, Licensed Lay Worker at St Lawrence, said: “Wilma’s attendance was organised by Children and Families Worker Fiona Rawlinson and curate Laine (pictured with her husband Mike and their son Malachi). The church was full, and it was a really joyful service.”

The Revd Rob Crofton, Vicar at St Lawrence, said: “It was wonderful to see so many people there, with so many families and newer people.”
