The Diocese of Gloucester has received a grant of £48,850 to support churches and church halls on the way to Net Zero Carbon.
The funds are part of the Church Commissioner’s £30 million commitment to bolster plans to achieve Net Zero Carbon emissions by the Church of England by 2030. ‘Quick wins’ grants of up to £5000 will be available to help PCCs across the diocese progress with small scale decarbonisation projects.
Lee Westcott, Net Zero Carbon Regional Programme Manager working with Gloucester, Worcester and Hereford dioceses, said: “The Diocese of Gloucester has been working hard to support churches in becoming low carbon or Net Zero Carbon, and I am really pleased to see this grant funding in place to make those important first step, quick wins. This funding will support a small number of churches to make real impacts in reducing carbon emissions and save money on their bills.”
A range of schemes will be eligible for funding. Examples could include replacing lightbulbs with LEDs, improving heating controls, under-pew heaters, infrared heaters and upgrades to electrical systems, to enable a church or church hall to move away from oil or gas heating. Adam Klups, Care of Churches and DAC Team Leader said: “We are well aware of the efforts individual churches put into the CofE-wide ambition to become Net Zero Carbon by 2030. These grants will add to the array of tools at our disposal to help our parishes get there a little quicker.”
The first deadline for applications is 11 May 2025 and the funds will need to be spent by the end of 2025.
