A live animal nativity trail at St Lawrence Church, Mickleton attracted more than 400 people to hear the familiar Christmas story.
Children were invited to be part of the experience, dressing up in nativity costumes and visiting the stable.
Shepherds watched real sheep, and Mary and Joseph had a real donkey to carry them safely on their way. Every child was given a picture book telling the Christmas story and could enjoy refreshments in the church with their family.
The event, funded by the Diocesan Mission Grant Scheme, took place just before the village’s annual outdoor carol service, giving a huge boost to the number of worshippers.
Nick Partridge, who organised the event said, “‘We were swept away in a tidal wave of Christmas joy to see all the families getting involved. Christmas is a time when people are seeking out community events, and ways to connect both with friends and neighbours. This event provided a wonderful opportunity for fellowship and celebration.”
The Revd Canon Craig Bishop said, “This was a wonderful event that exceeded our wildest expectations – over 100 children and more than 400 people in total.
“I counted 10 families sat quietly in the pews reading the Christmas story to their children from the picture book that was given out as a present. I picked up a couple of baptisms and a wedding while I was speaking to people!”
