The Dean of Gloucester, the Very Revd Andrew Zihni, has blessed CathedrALE, a new beer brewed in partnership between Gloucester Cathedral and Gloucester Brewery.
CathedrALE is inspired by centuries of monastic brewing, honouring the Benedictine tradition when beer was a part of daily life in monastic communities.
Ten percent of proceeds from each beer can will go to support the Cathedral’s Cloister Project, a conservation effort protecting Gloucester Cathedral’s 14th-century cloister. It features the finest example of fan vaulting in the world, and has appeared in films and TV series including Harry Potter and Wolf Hall.
The beer also ties in with the celebration of Lammas, the festival of the first harvest, traditionally observed on 1 August. The beer intends to encourage gratitude for the earth’s abundance and the people who bring it forth.
CathedrALE is available to buy from the Cathedral Gift Shop or from The Monk’s Kitchen.
Please note that the Cathedral encourages responsible drinking and does not condone excessive consumption.
