Open the Gospel September – 29 September, Trinity 18

‘Whoever is not against us is for us.’ The church hasn’t always be open to working with people of peace – it can feel like a minefield. But are we missing out in our caution?

Reading: Mark 9.38-end

John said to him, ‘Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he was not following us.’ But Jesus said, ‘Do not stop him; for no one who does a deed of power in my name will be able soon afterwards to speak evil of me. Whoever is not against us is for us. For truly I tell you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ will by no means lose the reward.

Questions:

  • How open are we to seeing God’s Spirit working in unexpected places?
  • What might we be afraid of?
  • How does God being at work beyond the church challenge our understanding of the Kingdom of God?

Things to think about with the child at the centre:

Think about who we are friends with, and who we might not get along with so easily?
How do we be a friend to everyone, even if we don’t always agree?
The Difference course is now adapted for children and young people.
