Greenway gifts, spreading comfort and joy

The Greenway Benefice (Badgeworth, Shurdington and Witcombe with Betham) is building on the success of their half term food and entertainment packs to bring some extra comfort and joy this Christmas.

Organiser Catherine Milsom said, “We originally intended this project to help those most in need from the school, however, after advertising our project and word of mouth spread, we soon became aware that there were many other individuals and families within Shurdington and the local community who would benefit from our help; job losses, reduction in working hours and the increase in the cost of food being sad consequences of the pandemic.”

This Christmas we are inviting families to come and collect grocery bags and a kids activity pack on 19 December. The kids pack contains:

  • Cookie or cake making mix
  • Candy cane reindeer sweet treat
  • Christmas rubber duck
  • Decorate your own Christmas tree decoration craft activity
  • Nativity stained glass window craft activity, with glue stick
  • Christmas book “Shhh, don’t wake the baby”
  • Prayer card
  • Drink
  • Chocolate treat

For Christmas, the churches are widening their outreach to include isolated or vulnerable adults within the community. They have so far identified 45+ adults (and with advertising hoping to reach more) who will benefit from having delivery of a grocery bag and adult gift bag – they are aiming to spread some comfort and joy.

The adult gift bag will contain:

  • Trifle mix
  • Christmas rubber duck
  • Decorate your own Christmas tree decoration craft activity
  • Hot chocolate sachet
  • Puzzle book
  • Angel sweet treat
  • Prayer card
  • Tea light candle
  • Home made mince pie (optional)
  • Christmas card – hopefully home made by school

Financial donations will pay for a selection of nappies, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo and sanitary products to be available to collectors.

Wendy who runs the local café, Beauty and the Teacup is supporting the project. Greenway gifts is paying for vulnerable clients to have a special home cooked hot Christmas two course meal that Wendy will deliver to them on 23 December. She has also agreed to deliver them with one of the gift bags and grocery bags at the same time.
