An evening of learning and reflection – during the 16 days of activism against gender based violence
PhD student, and sector practitioner, Susanna Webb will share her academic research into how preachers in UK Baptist churches approach the subject of domestic abuse from the pulpit, and what we can all learn from her findings – whatever our denomination or role – about supportingsurvivors and preventing abuse from thriving in our church communities.
Attendees will learn what Susanna’s academic research tells us about:
-
What motivates or prevents preachers in addressing domestic abuse in sermons.
-
The extent to which ministerial training prepares clergy to preach effectively and safely on
this subject. -
The barriers preachers face, including fear of reprisal, lack of knowledge, theological
challenges, and personal trauma. -
The outcomes for survivors — positive and negative — of preaching on domestic abuse in
church communities. -
Alternative/additional ways churches can address domestic abuse in their communities.
-
Actionable next steps for ministry and safeguarding practice.
£10 suggested optional donation.
Ticket includes a hot drink and summary of the research findings with guide for ongoing reflection.
