SUMMARY:Exploring Chaplaincy course
DESCRIPTION:Have you every wondered about being a chaplain? \n \nThese days there are chaplains in all sorts of places\, not just in hospitals and prisons. There are chaplains in primary schools\, GP surgeries\, town centres\, workplaces\, care homes\, law courts\, and even racecourses. You might be able to think of a possible chaplaincy opportunity near you. \nSome chaplains are paid\, but many are volunteers\, giving perhaps just one afternoon a week. Some are ordained\, but many are lay people. You don’t have to be an expert in anything to be a chaplain. You don’t need to be a super confident evangelist. You just need to be able to come alongside other people where they are\, showing God’s love through your listening and your care. \nExploring Chaplaincy is a course for people who want to think about this often-overlooked ministry. Could it be for you? Might there be an opportunity to develop chaplaincy from your church\, in your parish? The course is both for people who are already involved in chaplaincy and also for those just beginning to consider the possibility. \n  \nThe six meetings of the course will cover: \n\n What is a chaplain? What is distinctive about chaplaincy\n Don’t just do something  The importance of presence\n The cloak of compassion  Pastoral care and being prophetic\nTwo ears and one mouth  Listing to people\, listening to place\n Say one for me  The spirituality of chaplaincy\n Where we you go from here?  First steps\, support\, and supervision\n\nThe course is free. \nIt will run from Wednesday 14 January to Wednesday 25 February (with a break on 18 February) between 7.15pm – 9.15pm\, meeting at Francis Close Hall in Cheltenham. \nYou can apply for a place on the course here. \nFor more information please contact Simon Witcombe switcombe@glos.ac.uk

SUMMARY:Run the Race Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Therefore\, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses\, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely\, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us\, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith\, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross\, disregarding its shame\, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.  \nHebrews 12:1-2  \nHow do we run the race with endurance\, not falling into trying\, but rather training? \nWhat would it mean to make choices that allow us to flourish\, rest\, be more creative\, and joyful?  \nAs I have listened to felt needs around the Diocese\, how we are to manage our time\, make good choices about what to do and\, probably more importantly\, what not to do\, has come up all over the place. Run the race seeks to offer support into that.  \nThis is not so much a training day\, more led retreat. \nIn it there will be time to discern priorities\, get things in the diary that give us life [yes\, really\, bring your diary – let’s do this!]\, be realistic about what needs to go\, find space for that thing you’ve wanted to do for ages… above all\, to be reminded by God that you are beloved\, and don’t need to do anything to earn God’s love. \nTo book your place please click here. \nLed by: \nKate Stacey\, Collaborative Ministry Lead: Lifelong learning \nThe Revd Kate Stacey leads on the development of an innovative and collaborative approach to ensuring all ministries\, licensed\, lay and ordained grow and flourish.  Kate develops and delivers the CMD programme for everyone. \n  \n  \n  \nBecca Faal\, Strategic Lead for Safeguarding Training & Learning \nBecca is the lead for all safeguarding training and learning. SUMMARY:Tewkesbury Abbey Theology Forum: Worship the Lord in the beauty of Holiness - icons as images of transcendence
DESCRIPTION:Tewkesbury Abbey’s Theology Forum is having its next meeting on 21 January. This is a talk by the Revd Catherine Lomas\, a priest-iconographer who has been working on an icon for the Abbey for some while. \n\nCatherine was\, until 2023\, a parish priest and pioneer in the Diocese of Peterborough. She is now based in Wiltshire\, exploring a calling as a full-time iconographer and sacred artist. Her particular interest is in the use of visual means to explore theology and spirituality\, seeing our search for the Divine as sharing much in common with humanity’s innate longing for beauty.\n\nHer interest in icons began in 2007; she painted her first icon in 2016 and now exercises her priestly ministry through leading and speaking about icons\, art and spirituality\, as well as accepting commissions for new icons and sacred art (see more details here). She has recently completed a new children’s icon for Tewkesbury Abbey which will be presented to the Abbey on 18 January.\n\nAs usual this will be in the Abbey Parish Hall for drinks and nibbles at 7pm. Catherine will talk from 7.30pm. All are welcome.
