SUMMARY:Raising Awareness of Domestic Abuse
DESCRIPTION:There is a requirement that the Responding Well to Domestic Abuse Training course is completed by all clergy\, PTO\, Readers\, Bishop and Pastoral visitors\, Parish Safeguarding Officers\, PCC and lay chapter members. It is estimated that domestic abuse affects 1 in 3 women and 1 in 7 men. Therefore\, we will all know people who are victims and perpetrators of domestic abuse. \nThe aim of the module is designed to equip participants to engage thoughtfully and proactively with the issue of domestic abuse and those affected. \nWe recognise that not everyone will wish to complete modules online so we are also offering some face-to-face sessions. This might be a good way to ensure that people feel safe and supported when accessing the training\, particularly with this module. \nThis course will be run at St Luke’s\, Tutshill \nTo book a place\, please email: ku.gro.coidsolg@gniniartgnidraugefas

SUMMARY:Paths of Hope: seeking justice and compassion for Palestinians and Israelis
DESCRIPTION:Paths of Hope: seeking justice and compassion for Palestinians and Israelis 7.30pm Monday 10th November. St Laurence Church\, Stroud\nAuthor Matthew Teller in dialogue with The Rt Revd Rachel Treweek (Bishop of Gloucester)\, moderated by Judith Large. \nThis event will take a long-term perspective on the possibilities for a just peace for the inhabitants of the lands of Israel-Palestine\, based on equal rights and dignity for all. Matthew Teller will explore the prospects for a just “two-state solution” and for alternatives such as a single state governed through “nonterritorial autonomy”. Bishop Rachel will speak in response from her Christian faith perspective and share reflections from being in Israel-Palestine. A dialogue will follow\, in which Judith Large will bring in questions for the speakers from the audience as well as from her own perspective. \nWe’re very fortunate to have these two speakers bring their hopes for what can sometimes seem a hopeless situation.  Matthew Teller has a deep knowledge of the history and cultures of Israel-Palestine and the wider Middle East\, while Bishop Rachel will bring her experience of recent visits to the area and in particular to its Palestinian Christian communities.  The evening should be a great opportunity to learn about the situation and perhaps how people here in Gloucestershire can respond in hopeful ways that are open to the possibility that a just peace could eventually be achieved. \nPre-booking online is required (see here)\, but tickets are free\, with the opportunity to donate to the work of St Laurence Church: Stroud Centre for Peace and the Arts. Doors open at 7pm for a 7:30 pm start. \nSpeakers’ background: \nMatthew Teller is an Oxfordshire-based writer\, journalist\, broadcaster and speaker of Jewish background who has lived in\, worked in and travelled through the Middle East for more than four decades. He is the author of the 2022 book “Nine Quarters of Jerusalem” and is the co-editor of “Daybreak in Gaza”\, a 2024 anthology of writings by Palestinian authors.  He also wrote the “Rough Guide to Jordan” and the “Rough Guide to the Cotswolds”\, among other titles. \nRt Revd Rachel Treweek is the Bishop of Gloucester and sits in the House of Lords\, being the first female bishop to do so.  She is also the Anglican Bishop for HM Prisons. She is a regular visitor to Israel-Palestine and has published reflections on her experiences (see below). \nJudith Large is a Quaker and a Senior Research Fellow at the Conflict Analysis Research Centre\, University of Kent\, with three decades of practical experience in war and post-conflict transition settings. She also volunteers as a Saturday morning welcomer at St Laurence Church. \nRecommended reading: \nBishop Rachel writing on Israel-Palestine: \nShining a Light and Magnifying a Whisper (2025) \nIdentity\, Separation\, Power and Trauma (2024) \nMatthew Teller writing on nonterritorial autonomy for Israel-Palestine: \nMaking It Work from the River to the Sea – New Lines Magazine (2024)

SUMMARY:Preaching the Lectionary Gospel - a year with Matthew
DESCRIPTION:In ‘Preaching the Lectionary – Matthew’\, our aim will be to enter into Matthew’s world\, exploring the particular Jewish characteristics of his writing and audience\, and drawing out the unique contextual and theological insights of his Gospel\, while also reflecting on key aspects which differ from both John and the other synoptics.  But at the core of it all is the message it conveys\, and we’ll look together at how we might speak that same message into the hearts and lives of a very different audience today. \nThis event will run on Tuesday 18 November starting at 7pm or Wednesday 19 November at 10am \n  \nLed by Dan Button. \nDan has been the director of Gateway Theology School since 2017\, has a passion for both teaching and learning\, and is a lifelong follower of Jesus. Prior to GTS\, his career in theological & ministry training encompassed 20 years in Zimbabwe\, at Uganda Christian University\, and at Redcliffe College (Gloucester) as director of teaching & learning. Originally from Minnesota USA\, Dan was ordained in Uganda (2004) before finally settling in the UK in 2011 with his wife Rosie\, their two children\, and Tibetan Terrier\, Frodo.  Dan has taught extensively on the Gospels\, developing a ‘Harmony of the Gospels’ course which explores the theological distinctives of each gospel alongside fresh insights that only emerge when they’re read together. \nTo book your place on either of these events please click here.

SUMMARY:All you need to know for Festival of Wonder this weekend
DESCRIPTION:With just days to go until Stroud’s much-loved Festival of Wonder begins this year\, here’s everything you need to know for this weekend of performance. \nSt Laurence Church will be transformed from Friday 21 to Sunday 23 November\, as performers\, artists and community groups gather for a three-day celebration themed around ‘The Pearl of Great Price’. \nTo enhance the atmosphere and this year’s wider focus\, ‘finding wonder in the heart of nature’\, the church will become a woodland wonderland\, decorated with hundreds of leaves designed by primary school children from across the district. \nThe festival offers a weekend of spectacular free entertainment\, blending circus\, music\, workshops and reflective spaces. There is something there for all ages to enjoy. \nThe main show: The Briar and The Bramble\nThe weekend pivots around ‘The Briar and The Bramble’\, a specially commissioned 45-minute circus show written and directed by Andy Bewley and Tatiana Ozhiganova. \nInspired by this year’s theme\, the story explores ideas of value\, sacrifice and discovery. New for this year’s show is a live band. \nThe production stars: aerialists and acrobats Klodi & Yann\, who are coming directly from the West End show ‘Come Alive’; champion juggler\, Gordon Marquez; and stage magician\, Marco Cardoso. \nShow times: \n\n\nFriday 21 November: Two relaxed performances \n\n\nSaturday 22 November: Shows at 12pm and 3pm \n\n\nSaturday evening: Paid Gala show with Tweedy the Clown (almost sold out) \n\n\n→ ‘The Briar and The Bramble’ director’s note by Andy Bewley \nFriday night: Cabaret circus showcase\, ‘whispers and wings’\nThe weekend gets off to literally a flying start on Friday when\, after the relaxed performances\, a free cabaret circus showcase\, ‘whispers and wings’\, will be presented by School of Larks. There will be a bar and cocktails. Doors open at 8.15pm for an 8.30pm start. \nSaturday: Free community day\nFree community Saturday includes performances from circus performers\, dancers\, choirs and musicians. \nAcross the whole weekend\, visitors can enjoy: \n\nThe ‘wall of wonder’\n\nPhoto exhibition \n\n\nSecret garden \n\n\nCraft activities \n\n\nFree café (plus paid evening bar) \n\n\nUnder 5s play area \n\n\nHot food from community chef Sam Angelo \n\nFor the first time\, there is a youth club in Shambles Hall on Saturday evening\, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm\, offering a silent disco\, games consoles\, snacks and music\, hosted by IlluminateStroud.\n\nSunday: Workshops and finale\nSunday afternoon hosts several bookable workshops\, including the popular School of Larks circus workshop. You can book for workshop tickets online. \nThe festival closes at 6pm on Sunday 23 November with ‘circus of the Soul’. This free finale is expected to be extremely popular as it features Bristol’s Renewal Gospel Choir and Stroud’s Midnight Quartet\, plus a range of circus acts\, spoken word and aerial interpretations. Places are limited so free tickets need to be booked online on a first come\, first served basis. \nFestival of Wonder takes place at St Laurence: Stroud Centre for Peace & the Arts\, The Shambles\, Stroud\, GL5 1JL. \n→ Full details\, timings and tickets

SUMMARY:An evening of learning and reflection – during the 16 days of activism against gender based violence
DESCRIPTION:PhD student\, and sector practitioner\, Susanna Webb will share her academic research into how preachers in UK Baptist churches approach the subject of domestic abuse from the pulpit\, and what we can all learn from her findings – whatever our denomination or role – about supporting\nsurvivors and preventing abuse from thriving in our church communities.\n\nHer presentation will challenge assumptions about the prevalence of abuse in our church communities and will give inspiration for ongoing good reflective ministry practice.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAttendees will learn what Susanna’s academic research tells us about: \n\n\nWhat motivates or prevents preachers in addressing domestic abuse in sermons. \n\n\nThe extent to which ministerial training prepares clergy to preach effectively and safely on\nthis subject. \n\n\nThe barriers preachers face\, including fear of reprisal\, lack of knowledge\, theological\nchallenges\, and personal trauma. \n\n\nThe outcomes for survivors — positive and negative — of preaching on domestic abuse in\nchurch communities. \n\n\nAlternative/additional ways churches can address domestic abuse in their communities. \n\n\nActionable next steps for ministry and safeguarding practice. \n\n\n\nPlaces can be booked in advance online here.  Booking is advisable.\n\n\n\n\nThe event is from 7.30pm to 8.45pm.\n\n\n\n£10 suggested optional donation. \nTicket includes a hot drink and summary of the research findings with guide for ongoing reflection. \nFor further information or queries\, please contact:\ninfo@preachingthatprotects.co.uk
