SUMMARY:“Renewing Hope in Smaller Churches” gathering by ReSource
DESCRIPTION:ReSource’s primary call is to foster spiritual renewal in the little\, local and ordinary churches that represent the backbone of the Church. This is an opportunity for us to gather\, encourage one another and wrestle together with the realities of renewing hope\, particularly\, though not exclusively\, in those churches with smaller congregations. We intend the day and topic to be accessible to many in the area who are not yet part of the ReSource family. \nFacilitated by Jolyon Trickey and others\, with biblical teaching from David Newman\, formerly warden of Launde Abbey\, the day will offer an opportunity for teams and individuals to \n\nWorship and encounter God afresh;\nRenew confidence in the inextinguishable power of biblical hope; and\nWrestle with the practicalities of living hopefully in the local church.\n\nWe will also pray for each other\, enjoy a good quality lunch and offer anointing. \nIf you would like to join us\, please do book your place. \nWe recognise that many of our invitations come from word of mouth or through personal recommendation\, so do please invite colleagues or local friends who might value the attached invitation or enjoy attending the day? A flyer is available to download here.

SUMMARY:Christian Aid Restore campaign: workshops and webinars
DESCRIPTION:The International development agency asks people to back new global call for debt justice. Christian Aid is calling for change to the unequal global debt system which robs millions of families of the chance of a better life. \nA series of workshops and webinars have been organised to give people more information on the issues and on how they can join the movement. \nThe charity was one of the founding members of the Jubilee 2000 international movement which won $130bn of debt cancellation owed by 35 of the poorest countries. \nChristian Aid and its supporters are now urging the UK Government to tackle the twin issues of global debt and the climate crisis which are still trapping millions of people in poverty. \n\nJennifer Larbie\, the charity’s Head of UK Advocacy and Campaigns\, said: \n“For too long\, the UK Government has backed the world’s biggest polluters and greediest corporate lenders\, fuelling the climate and debt crises\, and leaving communities struggling for survival. \n“Weather has become more severe and erratic which means crops are failing and people are struggling to feed their families. On top of this\, many at risk of climate disasters are also in a debt crisis; debt payments prevent governments from addressing their citizens’ basic needs or responding to the climate crisis. \n“But it doesn’t have to be this way. The UK is uniquely placed to act. It has the power to confront polluters and lenders who are driving the climate and debt crises. Cancelling debts and forcing polluters to pay for the damage they’ve done would provide governments with more resources to spend on health and education\, help communities recover from climate disasters\, and build resilience against future shocks. \n“We look forward to welcoming supporters to these online gatherings where we will be able to offer information\, and hopefully inspiration\, on this vital work to restore creation and to see the flourishing of all people.” \n\nTo register for the online sessions\, which start on Wednesday 26 March\, please visit the Christian Aid website and click on Get Involved and Campaigns.

SUMMARY:Into Incumbency: Environment and Faith
DESCRIPTION:Against the background of the climate and biodiversity emergencies\, the Diocese is giving increasing priority to exploring environmental concerns as a core discipleship priority.  We achieved bronze Eco Diocese accreditation in February 2021 and are working towards silver\, recognising both that it is something we are called to do in God and that it is increasingly becoming a missional barrier when churches are not seen to be taking this seriously.  This session explores both the theological underpinning and practical outworking of environmental commitment within church life. \n  \nTo book one or more of the Into Incumbency courses please click here to access the booking form \nFor further information about the course and details of other dates please click on the programme below \nInto Incumbency Programme 2024-25

SUMMARY:Cancelled: GoodWill Event
DESCRIPTION:Please note\, this event has been cancelled. Please email Lisa-Jayne for more information.  \nHave you got questions about Wills\, Probate & Power of Attorneys? Have you got no idea how to plan or pay for a funeral? Concerned about the eco nature of your death? Want to know about ‘Swedish Death Cleaning’? Slightly concerned your cat might eat you if you die alone? (no seriously!) \nWe’ll tackle all this and more at our ‘GoodWill’ event. \nThey say that there are two things in life that are inevitable\, death and taxes. However\, it has been proven by large corporations and a smattering of celebrities and MPs that taxes can be avoided; death\, on the other hand\, is a 100% guarantee. Why\, then\, is it still such a taboo topic? \nAt this event you’ll hear from a funeral director\, a solicitor\, a death education specialist and others in the industry and you’ll be able to ask any questions you may have about anything from funeral planning to leaving a bequest to your church\, whatever you want to know\, we’ll have the answers. \nCome along for a surprisingly light and informative event\, we promise it won’t be weird! \n  \nLisa- Jayne Lewis – Stewardship and Giving Advisor \nLisa-Jayne helps church leaders to think about how they can preach and teach about money\, how churches can find ways to increase their income\, find grants and think about regular giving and  financial stewardship as part of our Christian discipleship.

SUMMARY:Holocaust Memorial Day – Remembering Srebrenica
DESCRIPTION:Every year Holocaust Memorial Day provides an opportunity to remind us where hatred\, prejudice and racism can ultimately lead. \nAt the start of the new millennium\, the United Kingdom made a commitment “to remember the victims of Nazi persecution and of all genocides\,” and set January 27th as Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD). \nSince 2015 St Mary’s Church in Kingswood\, has provided one of the few public events in the county where survivors of genocide can share their story. In recent years we have welcomed: \n\nHarry Bibring witnessed Kristallnacht in Vienna\, before fleeing as a child with his sister on the Kinder transport.\nJohn Dobai as a 10 year old endured the siege of Budapest.\nJanine Webber witnessed her family being led away to be killed\, alone she was forced to hide\, finally finding refuge in a monastery.\nEric Murangwa the goalkeeper for the leading football team in Rwanda\, escaped the genocide due to the courage of his teammates.\n\nThis year in conjunction with Remembering Srebrenica and to mark the 30th anniversary of the genocide at Srebrenica\, we are pleased to welcome Sheila Osmanovic to share her story with us. Sheila grew up in Sarajevo\, aware of conflict elsewhere\, but never thought that it would happen where she lived. Sheila survived the siege of Sarajevo and will talk about her experience\, explain the background to the conflict in Bosnia and the events that led to the genocide at Srebrenica. \nHear her story from 7pm\, refreshments starting at 6.30pm. \nFor press/media interest in Holocaust Memorial Day at St Mary’s contact Bob Copeland or Revd Rick Williams.

SUMMARY:Christian Aid Changemakers’ Conference
DESCRIPTION:As Christian Aid marks its 80th anniversary\, supporters from up and down the country will be gathering for the annual Changemakers’ Conference – Changing the world together. \nThe event is an opportunity to hear the results from Christian Aid Week 2024\, find out about the stories behind this year’s appeal and meet up with other supporters and Christian Aid staff and partners. \nIf you can’t make it in person\, there are other ways to join in – from regional watch parties to watching online. \nAmong the guests will be Gerardo Calderón Tobar\, who is the Programme Manager in Guatemala – the focus of this year’s Christian Aid Week. \nGuatemala is part of the Central American Dry Corridor\, an area which endures unpredictable rain patterns\, bringing both severe droughts and catastrophic floods. These challenging conditions used to be predictable and manageable. Now\, the climate crisis is causing seasons to intensify and shift erratically. As a result\, vital crops are failing\, plunging farming families into hunger and poverty. \nChristian Aid has been working with its partner\, Coordinación de ONG y Cooperativas (Congcoop)\, and alongside communities\, to combine traditional farming with newer ways of working. \nThanks to supporters throughout the UK\, Congcoop is able to offer training and tools so farmers can diversify and grow more resilient crops\, build water recycling systems using household items\, and create organic fertiliser. They are also supported with selling produce locally and campaigning for their rights against land grabs by industrial plantation owners. \nAs well as looking ahead to Christian Aid Week\, the conference will also be reflecting on the charity’s 80 years of work and accomplishments\, including an update on ongoing initiatives in places like Gaza. \nDuring the afternoon\, there will be seminars and workshops\, organised in partnership with Faith for the Climate \, which will be recorded for those not attending in person\, and a more in-depth Q&A with the visitors from Guatemala. \nTo complement the in-person event\, there will be more than a dozen Changemaker Watch Parties taking place across the country where people can join with fellow supporters and Church Engagement and Fundraising Officers to watch the conference via live-stream. \nTo register\, visit www.christian-aid.org.uk and go to Events – and if your church or Christian Aid group would like to host a watch party\, please email hello@christian-aid.org.
