SUMMARY:Raising awareness of domestic abuse
DESCRIPTION:There is a requirement that the Raising awareness of domestic abuse course is completed by all clergy\, PTO\, Readers\, Bishop and Pastoral visitors\, Parish Safeguarding Officers\, PCC and lay chapter members. It is estimated that domestic abuse affects 1 in 3 women and 1 in 7 men. Therefore\, we will all know people who are victims and perpetrators of domestic abuse. \nThe aim of the module is designed to equip participants to engage thoughtfully and proactively with the issue of domestic abuse and those affected. \nWe recognise that not everyone will wish to complete modules online so we are also offering some face-to-face sessions. This might be a good way to ensure that people feel safe and supported when accessing the training\, particularly with this module. \nTo book a place\, please email: ku.gro.coidsolg@gniniartgnidraugefas

SUMMARY:Deerhurst Flower Festival 2024
DESCRIPTION:The Deerhurst Flower Festival has been taking place in one guise or another for many years. Its present format (every other year\, during August Bank Holidays) dates back to the 1980s when a parishioner thought it would be memorable way to celebrate her silver wedding with a special floral event at the church. \nThe formula was so successful that the village has repeated the festival biennially ever since. \nVisitors come from far and wide to visit the festival and it has become a regular fixture on many calendars. The local communities of Deerhurst and Apperley are very proud of what they achieve over the weekend and are pleased to be able to share this with you. \nThe theme for 2024 is The big read and it will give the flower arrangers\, most of whom live locally\, plenty of scope to create some imaginative and original flower displays – using some terrific props too. \nKeep  up to date with details via the Deerhurst website and Facebook page. \nDogs are allowed on the Priory lawn\, but the organisers ask that they please remain on a lead at all times.

SUMMARY:Open the Gospel: 1 September\, 14 after Trinity
DESCRIPTION:Reading: Mark 7.1-8\,14\,15\,21-23  \nNow when the Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around him\, they noticed that some of his disciples were eating with defiled hands\, that is\, without washing them. (For the Pharisees\, and all the Jews\, do not eat unless they thoroughly wash their hands\, thus observing the tradition of the elders; and they do not eat anything from the market unless they wash it; and there are also many other traditions that they observe\, the washing of cups\, pots\, and bronze kettles.) So the Pharisees and the scribes asked him\, “Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders\, but eat with defiled hands?” He said to them\, “Isaiah prophesied rightly about you hypocrites\, as it is written\,  \n‘This people honours me with their lips\, but their hearts are far from me;\nin vain do they worship me\, teaching human precepts as doctrines.’  \nYou abandon the commandment of God and hold to human tradition.”  \nThen he called the crowd again and said to them\, “Listen to me\, all of you\, and understand: there is nothing outside a person that by going in can defile\, but the things that come out are what defile.” For it is from within\, from the human heart\, that evil intentions come: fornication\, theft\, murder\, adultery\, avarice\, wickedness\, deceit\, licentiousness\, envy\, slander\, pride\, folly. All these evil things come from within\, and they defile a person.”  \nQuestions:  \n\nWhen might we be distracted by things that don’t really matter? \n\n\nAre there things in our worship that are for a good reason\, but are not the reason? \n\n\nWhat precious tradition might we be challenged about; perhaps even stops us from seeing the truth? \n\nThings to think about with the child at the centre:  \nDirty Hands – how could we visually and physically act this out? Dirt? Flour?  \nMemories of COVID and hand sanitiser in every shop/office/classroom. We actually learnt that COVID was transmitted from lungs to lungs (inside to inside) not hand to hand (outside to outside)  \nHow often do we worry about how other people look? \nAre we influenced by people who look good\, or say good\, or do good?\nHow often do we worry about what we look like\, more than what we say or do?
