SUMMARY:Gateway Theology Forum: 'Josephine Butler: Patron Saint of Prostitutes'
DESCRIPTION:Gateway Theology School (GTS) invites you to the next Gateway Forum on 27 March\, from 7pm to 9pm at St Matthew’s\, Cheltenhmam.\n\nThe topic is ‘Josephine Butler: Patron Saint of Prostitutes’.\n\nIn the light of the Epstein files\, news of smuggling gangs into Europe and the UK\, and documentaries of dark\, protected ‘off the map’ locations in foreign countries\, we may see sex trafficking as a serious modern concern.  But it has always been a serious problem throughout history\, no less so in ‘prim and proper’ Victorian England.  Rarely has it been brought into the light\, nor the powerful forces behind it been challenged and exposed.   \nBut 50 years before women gained the right to vote\, Josephine Butler (1828-1906) a devout Christian from a privileged background – became one of the most courageous social reformers in modern history\, fighting a powerful patriarchy\, and succeeding against all odds in repealing a law which allowed prostitutes to be sexually assaulted by police on a regular basis. \nLearn about the life of this most remarkable woman\, a local heroine (from Cheltenham and Oxford) whose faith drove her to act at great personal peril\, and yet whose legacy has been largely obscured – being too far ahead of her time. \n\n\nThe speaker is James Greig\, an Oxford based lawyer-historian.\n\nThe cost is by donation\, but please register in advance by emailing info@gtstheology.org\n\nFurther information→

SUMMARY:Moments of Wonder
DESCRIPTION:‘Moments of Wonder’ awaits us all in St Laurence Church\, Stroud on Saturday 25 April as the Festival of Wonder’s new experience\, ‘Moments of Wonder’\, comes to town. \nBrought to you by Ignition Gloucestershire\, the team behind Stroud’s Festival of Wonder\, the church will once again be transformed into a world of exploration as people are encouraged to ‘reawaken wonder in an age of exhaustion’. \nFor one day only catch a glimpse of a brand new bespoke art installation by local artists Pyrite Creative and circus performances by Stroud’s ‘School of Larks’\, alongside creative and reflective spaces for all ages. \nThe Revd Simon Howell\, Stroud Parish Churches Pioneer Minister\, said:“When you arrive you will quickly spy the incredible art piece but as you look closer you discover that everything in enveloped by a shroud of strangely beautiful veils. And as you try to pass through to get close to main structure – almost as if you are being drawn in by magnets – keep your eyes peeled as young circus artists\, the Scrubland Punks\, appear as if from nowhere to distract you from your quest with their wizard-like circus skills.” \nThe free event runs from 9.30am to 2.45pm although we invite everyone to experience the story behind the art at 11am\, 12pm\, 1pm and 2pm as we introduce Brendan McMoses and the Scrublands Punks with spoken word\, circus and more. \nAlongside the hourly performances there will be a reflective space and plenty of interactive creative activities\, face painting and circus skills for all ages and abilities – all free. Plus pay as you feel refreshments. \nAnd on Sunday 26 April at 9.30am\, St Laurence Church will host ‘Punk Monks’\, described as ‘not your usual Sunday morning service’. This special service will be based around the Pyrite Creative art installation\, with members of School of Larks performing\, as the theme of ‘Punk Monks – spiritual life lived in intensity’ is explored. \nFind out more→
