DESCRIPTION:Handel Opera Comes to Gloucestershire — with Local Musician Mark Wilson at its heart \nGLOUCESTERSHIRE is to welcome New Trinity Baroque’s acclaimed production of Handel’s Giulio Cesare in Egitto\, when the international ensemble brings the opera to Holy Trinity Church\, Minchinhampton\, on Sunday 6 September at 3pm\, immediately following its London performances. \nGloucestershire musician Mark Wilson\, a distinguished bassoonist\, countertenor and conductor specialising in historically informed performance is at the heart of this exceptional local event. Mark regularly performs with leading period-instrument ensembles and as a countertenor soloist. He directs the chamber choir La Mattina and baroque group Ensemble La Notte\, and is Director of Music at Pembroke College\, Oxford. He also plays with The English Wind Consort. \nAs a Baroque opera enthusiast\, Mark is delighted that Giulio Cesare is coming to Minchinhampton. He says; “Handel gives both singers and instruments virtuosic music to perform. Arias may be sweet and tender\, then followed by a ferocious chorus\, or vice versa. His versatile writing is perfectly suited to the story it’s telling. A personal highlight of mine is Cesare’s aria Empio\, dirò\, tu sei\, which has a frenetic upper-string accompaniment that the singer needs to have incredible power to keep up with whilst singing the words ‘I will say\, you are wicked!’” \nNew Trinity Baroque is a UK-registered charity dedicated to historically informed performance on period instruments. \nIts musicians come from Britain and Europe and combine specialist knowledge of Baroque performance practice with a highly dramatic approach to opera. \nThe Minchinhampton performance will be semi-staged\, with movement\, acting\, selected costumes and props\, adapting the company’s fully staged London production to the intimate and beautiful setting of Holy Trinity Church. An international cast of six soloists will be accompanied by around ten period-instrument players\, including strings\, recorder\, oboe\, bassoon and harpsichord\, conducted by their director Predrag Gosta from the harpsichord. \nFirst performed in London in 1724\, Giulio Cesare tells the story of Julius Caesar and Cleopatra against the turbulent political world of ancient Egypt. Its combination of political intrigue\, romance\, revenge and comedy provides the setting for some of Handel’s most dazzling and emotionally powerful music. \nThe same international cast appears in London at the Arcola Theatre from 2–5 September\, before the production travels to Gloucestershire for its unique semi-staged presentation in Minchinhampton. \nFor local audiences\, this is a rare opportunity to experience a major Handel opera performed by internationally experienced singers and period-instrument specialists — while also celebrating the contribution of one of Gloucestershire’s distinguished musicians. \n\nTickets £18–£25\, available on the door\, or with a 10% online discount at www.newtrinitybaroque.org

DESCRIPTION:The CMN Children’s Ministry Essentials Course is a new and exciting resource for children’s ministry. It is aimed at anyone who is volunteering with children in the church or community\, and particularly those who wish to grow in confidence\, knowledge and ability. It is packed full of useful information to equip and strengthen anyone ministering to children in churches and community projects. The course is made up of ten 1h30min sessions with films and lots of great content. \nClick here to register your interest. \nIt is based upon the three key principles of: \nKnowing the child \nGrowing and developing children’s ministry \nLeader development  \nThe ten modules include topics such as: the world of the child\, leadership and teamwork\, the role of play in faith formation\, and inclusion. \nThe course is delivered by the Children’s Ministry Network (CMN)\, who have collaborated as part of Churches Together in Britain and Ireland (CTBI)\, to develop excellent content that will prove valuable to anyone working in ministry with children. \nThis event will be led by Jo Wetherall and Helen Champion. \nJo Wetherall –  Senior Children and Families Connector \nThe Revd Joanne Wetherall supports churches across the diocese in developing their work with children and families\, including the nurturing of faith in the home and school-parish relationships. \n  \nHelen Champion – Gloucester City Youth Connector \nHelen is the Youth Connector for Gloucester city\, working in the Deanery and wider Diocese to enable young people to experience ‘life in all its fullness.’ \n

DESCRIPTION:St Giles Church\, 76 The Street\, Uley\, GL11 5SN \nOrlando Jopling will perform an enchanting evening of music. \nAn internationally acclaimed cellist\, conductor\, composer and artistic director of the Roman River Festival and Wild Arts\, Orlando has performed over 150 solo recitals in stunning churches throughout the UK over the last 15 years\, helping to raise funds for their maintenance. \nHe will be playing Bach Suites for solo cello in G major\, D minor and C major. \nThe concert is free\, but donations towards the church are welcome.

SUMMARY:'Antiphony' art exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of St Mary the Virgin\, Hawkesbury\, are delighted to announce ‘Antiphony’\, a new exhibition by three graduates of the 2025 Fine Art MA at Bath Spa University: Sally Jones\, Philip Ringland\, and Lindsay Woodman. \nThis unique collaboration brings together works that engage in dialogue with one another and with the architectural\, historical and spiritual significance of St Mary’s Church. Conceived through a form of call and response\, the artists respond to the church not simply as a backdrop\, but as a lived and meaningful space shaped by human history\, religious ritual\, materiality and the natural environment. Antiphony invites visitors to experience the church in new ways and to open conversations between place\, history\, faith\, memory and imagination. \nFriends of St Mary’s Secretary Debbie Young says: “We are thrilled that St Mary’s has inspired these remarkable artists. She creates immersive works that integrate moving image\, sound\, touch\, and smell to evoke sensory and emotional experiences. \nThe Friends of St Mary’s was formed in 1980 by people who care deeply about the beauty and tranquillity of the church and its grounds.. DESCRIPTION:The Revd Tudor Griffiths\nWe all face the prospect of retirement. But do we look forward to it with anticipation\, uncertainty\, or dread? \nWhat does retirement even mean? As a modern concept associated with employment and career\, can there really be a ‘theology of retirement’? Does the Bible have anything to say about God’s purpose and plan for this latter phase of life? \nTudor Griffiths will explore the Biblical idea of rest (alongside retirement) as the ‘Sabbath of life’\, connecting questions of identity\, hope\, purpose – and finding wisdom in unique sources\, from Ecclesiastes to William Cowper. \nThe Revd Dr Tudor Griffiths was born and raised in South Wales\, Tudor’s career in ordained ministry and mission spanned several countries – Wales\, Uganda\, and here in Cheltenham and Gloucester – before ‘retirement’\, only to become the mayor of Chepstow! SUMMARY:Bi-monthly networking breakfasts at Brimscombe Mill
DESCRIPTION:Following the last two 10:10 Circles\, there are now a growing number of alumni who are keen to continue meeting\, networking and learning from one another. There are some new partners and friends who are doing new and exciting things in their communities\, and we would love to provide the opportunity for people with a vision and passion for doing things differently to join us for coffee\, cookies and the opportunity to connect with others who share the vision. \nThe breakfasts will be held at The Grace Network site at Brimscombe Mill\, and will be facilitated by Will Mansell (Grace Network) and Catherine Pearson (external consultant). Diocesan staff will also attend these informal sessions. \nAll are welcome to come along – just turn up on the day and introduce yourself. The gatherings will start at 9.30am and will be finished by 11.30am. We plan to have bi-monthly meetings – Fridays are good days for Brimscombe Mill\, although we are aware that many people take their day off on a Friday\, so we will be reviewing the dates as we move into 2027.
