SUMMARY:Open the Gospel: 1 September\, 14 after Trinity
DESCRIPTION:Reading: Mark 7.1-8\,14\,15\,21-23  \nNow when the Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around him\, they noticed that some of his disciples were eating with defiled hands\, that is\, without washing them. (For the Pharisees\, and all the Jews\, do not eat unless they thoroughly wash their hands\, thus observing the tradition of the elders; and they do not eat anything from the market unless they wash it; and there are also many other traditions that they observe\, the washing of cups\, pots\, and bronze kettles.) So the Pharisees and the scribes asked him\, “Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders\, but eat with defiled hands?” He said to them\, “Isaiah prophesied rightly about you hypocrites\, as it is written\,  \n‘This people honours me with their lips\, but their hearts are far from me;\nin vain do they worship me\, teaching human precepts as doctrines.’  \nYou abandon the commandment of God and hold to human tradition.”  \nThen he called the crowd again and said to them\, “Listen to me\, all of you\, and understand: there is nothing outside a person that by going in can defile\, but the things that come out are what defile.” For it is from within\, from the human heart\, that evil intentions come: fornication\, theft\, murder\, adultery\, avarice\, wickedness\, deceit\, licentiousness\, envy\, slander\, pride\, folly. All these evil things come from within\, and they defile a person.”  \nQuestions:  \n\nWhen might we be distracted by things that don’t really matter? \n\n\nAre there things in our worship that are for a good reason\, but are not the reason? \n\n\nWhat precious tradition might we be challenged about; perhaps even stops us from seeing the truth? \n\nThings to think about with the child at the centre:  \nDirty Hands – how could we visually and physically act this out? Dirt? Flour?  \nMemories of COVID and hand sanitiser in every shop/office/classroom. We actually learnt that COVID was transmitted from lungs to lungs (inside to inside) not hand to hand (outside to outside)  \nHow often do we worry about how other people look? \nAre we influenced by people who look good\, or say good\, or do good?\nHow often do we worry about what we look like\, more than what we say or do?

SUMMARY:Deerhurst Flower Festival 2024
DESCRIPTION:The Deerhurst Flower Festival has been taking place in one guise or another for many years. Its present format (every other year\, during August Bank Holidays) dates back to the 1980s when a parishioner thought it would be memorable way to celebrate her silver wedding with a special floral event at the church. \nThe formula was so successful that the village has repeated the festival biennially ever since. \nVisitors come from far and wide to visit the festival and it has become a regular fixture on many calendars. The local communities of Deerhurst and Apperley are very proud of what they achieve over the weekend and are pleased to be able to share this with you. \nThe theme for 2024 is The big read and it will give the flower arrangers\, most of whom live locally\, plenty of scope to create some imaginative and original flower displays – using some terrific props too. \nKeep  up to date with details via the Deerhurst website and Facebook page. \nDogs are allowed on the Priory lawn\, but the organisers ask that they please remain on a lead at all times.

SUMMARY:Raising awareness of domestic abuse
DESCRIPTION:There is a requirement that the Raising awareness of domestic abuse course is completed by all clergy\, PTO\, Readers\, Bishop and Pastoral visitors\, Parish Safeguarding Officers\, PCC and lay chapter members. It is estimated that domestic abuse affects 1 in 3 women and 1 in 7 men. Therefore\, we will all know people who are victims and perpetrators of domestic abuse. \nThe aim of the module is designed to equip participants to engage thoughtfully and proactively with the issue of domestic abuse and those affected. \nWe recognise that not everyone will wish to complete modules online so we are also offering some face-to-face sessions. This might be a good way to ensure that people feel safe and supported when accessing the training\, particularly with this module. \nTo book a place\, please email: ku.gro.coidsolg@gniniartgnidraugefas

He has been dubbed “one of the biggest new musical talents in Britain” (Vogue). \nSoumik collaborates with refugees\, mental health and climate change practitioners\, as well as artists from disparate global traditions  including Beyonce\, Jay-Z\, Nitin Sawhney\, Akram Khan\, Anoushka Shankar and the BBC Singers. \nArriving in UK\, at first I felt an outsider and used music as a way of escaping the discomfort. But I soon realised this is what I wanted to bring into the world.  I combine different disciplines\, and with each project I get more curious about the human condition and the stories we tell. The Theme of “Finding Home in Two Worlds” speaks to the refugee experience as well as the challenge of living on earth\, while sometimes longing to be in Heaven! – Soumik Datta \nSoumik will be performing his pathbreaking piece “Borderlands”. \nYou can listen to Soumik Datta here.  \nThe Green Room Collective is a group of artists from migrant and refugee backgrounds who create performances that blend music and spoken word to explore themes of home\, displacement\, and migration. Their work celebrates diversity and the power of collaboration. \n\n\n\nEach one of these multi-talented\, streetwise\, transglobal performers of the Green Room Collective would be worth spending an evening with\, experiencing their solo work. The fact that we have six of them collaborating so that we can witness the birthing of a new musical work of startling relevance is beyond value. They collectively weave music\, songs\, spoken word and film to produce a magnificent tribute to resilience.  – The Revd Simon Howell\, originator of the Festival. \n\n\n\nIntroducing the performers of the Green Room Collective: \nThe Green Room Collective includes three musicians with South Asian heritage and training in classical Indian music\, alongside a Palestinian Oud player new to the lineup. Their performances are a fusion of cultures\, showcasing a high quality of musicianship and emotional power. Through their art\, they address issues of migration\, displacement\, political struggle\, collusion\, and privilege. \nHéctor Manchego – spoken word \nHossein Mirzagholi – guitar and voice \nGiuliano Modarelli – guitar and voice \nDeeptarka Mukhopadhyay – tabla and percussion \nPreetha Narayanan  – violin\, piano\, voice \nSaied Silbak – oud \n  \nTickets can be bought by clicking here. \nTo apply for a free ticket (this also includes free tickets for refugees\, asylum seekers and referrals)\, you can sign up or come along on the day and convey your situation to the ticket table. \n  \n  \n  \n
