SUMMARY:Bayeux tapestry exhibition at Tewkesbury Abbey
DESCRIPTION:Tewkesbury Abbey is set to bring one of history’s greatest stories to life this autumn with From Conquest to Kingdom – The Bayeux Tapestry and Norman Heritage Trail\, opening on 22 October 2026. \nSet within one of Britain’s finest Norman buildings\, the exhibition invites visitors to experience the story of 1066 inside the very world it created. It features a full-scale printed reproduction of the Bayeux Tapestry\, immersed in Tewkesbury Abbey’s own Norman heritage. \nThe exhibition is presented in partnership with the British Museum\, as part of Bayeux Around Britain\, supported by WorldQuant. \nThe Bayeux Tapestry tells the story of the Norman Conquest. At Tewkesbury Abbey\, visitors can step inside the world it created and explore more than 80 years of history through kings and queens\, faith and power\, architecture\, craftsmanship and everyday life. \nMoving beyond the famous scenes of the Battle of Hastings\, From Conquest to Kingdom explores how the Norman Conquest transformed England and how the new kingdom developed between 1066 and 1154. Visitors will encounter the stories of remarkable individuals who shaped both England and Tewkesbury Abbey\, including Queen Matilda\, Robert Fitzhamon and Robert FitzRoy. \nThe exhibition is divided into two connected chapters. Conquest explores the Battle of Hastings\, William the Conqueror’s victory and the dramatic birth of Norman England through the full-scale reproduction of the tapestry. \nKingdom then looks beyond the battlefield to reveal how the Norman Conquest reshaped everyday life. New rulers\, ideas and architecture transformed England’s landscape\, while faith\, monastic traditions\, craftsmanship\, fashion and music helped create a vibrant new society. \nFor the people of South West England and beyond\, Tewkesbury Abbey provides a remarkable regional perspective on this national story\, perfect for those unable to visit the London exhibition. Founded within decades of the Conquest\, the Abbey’s soaring Norman architecture bears witness to the ambition\, faith and craftsmanship of the period. The Norman Heritage Trail allows visitors to discover the people\, places and ideas that shaped the medieval world around them. \nThe result is an exhibition in which the setting is as important as the story itself. Standing beneath Europe’s largest Romanesque tower\, visitors encounter Tewkesbury Abbey not simply as the home of the exhibition\, but as one of its greatest exhibits. \nThe exhibition is free\, entrance to the Abbey is by voluntary donation.

SUMMARY:Celebrating St George’s Day 2027 – free webinar for churches
DESCRIPTION:Events in the last few years have put questions of Englishness\, symbols and the place of faith in national life into the spotlight like never before in living memory. \nToo often the flag of St George has been claimed by those who want to divide people rather than bring them together\, sometimes leaving churches unsure whether to mark the day at all. But St George’s Day is an opportunity for churches to bring local communities together and look forward to the future as well as to reaffirm the place of churches at the heart of our communities and the nation. \nApril may seem a long way off but the Bishops’ Working Group for Promoting Unity in our Nation is stepping up work now to help churches across England make the most of the opportunity. \nIt will be hosting a free webinar for church leaders on Monday October 26 at 6pm exploring why talking about England matters; celebrating English identity generously and some practical\, tried-and-tested ideas for planning a community St George’s Day event. \nChaired by Bishop Martyn Snow\, speakers will include: \n\nJohn Denham — former Cabinet minister\, now Director of the Centre for English Identity and Politics at the University of Southampton.\nChine McDonald — Director of Theos\nSunder Katwala — Director of British Future\n\nDo joins us and please spread the word. \nReserve a spot here → \n

SUMMARY:Preaching the Lectionary Gospel - exploring the Gospel of Mark
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to a learning session on Preaching the Lectionary for 2025/26\, exploring the Gospel of Mark\, on Wednesday 11th November from 6.30pm to 9.30pm\, or on 30 Thursday 12th November from 9.30am to 12.30pm at The Church Centre\, Station Road\, Andoversford\, Cheltenham GL5 4LA. \nOur speaker will be Dr Anna Hutchinson\, Lecturer and Tutor in Theology at St Mellitus South West. \nThis learning is a chance to refresh yourself with the themes of the Gospel of Mark\, and a chance to reflect on how you could explore this Gospel in your preaching in the new lectionary year. \nTo book a place on one of these sessions\, please register here. Please note that the same material will be covered in both sessions\, so you only need to attend one. \n  \nDr Anna Hutchinson is a Lecturer and Tutor in Theology at St Mellitus South West\, and has a PhD in Theology from the University of Birmingham\, where she researched the hermeneutics of Evangelical Christians\, with a particular focus on the role of the Doctrine of Scripture in interpretation\, and theological education. She says of her learning\, “Studying theology as an undergrad was a huge turning point for me. I suddenly had so many questions about faith\, but God in his grace brought me through those to a deeper and stronger relationship with Him\, as well as to a love for theology which has shaped the whole direction of my life…. Each time\, God gives me a different or fresher insight into His Word and this enables me to keep persevering. Meeting other believers\, reading God’s word together\, and praying with each other are some of the ways that I try to keep my eyes fixed on the author and perfector of our faith.” \n

SUMMARY:What future for our rural churches?
DESCRIPTION:A Gloucester Historic Churches Trust talk on 12 November\, at the Royal Agricultural University. \nFiona Reynolds will compare the movements to ‘save’ country houses and that to ‘save’ country churches\, stimulated by two significant exhibitions at the V&A around fifty years ago:  The Destruction of the Country House in 1974 and Change and Decay – the future of our churches in 1977. \nBut while country houses were largely ‘saved’\, churches were not\, and she will argue that churches have been left behind in the nation’s consciousness.  That needs to change if the many beautiful rural churches with declining congregations are to survive the chill winds of the twenty first century and find long term sustainability.  Fiona will explore some possible remedies and solutions and will welcome ideas from the audience.
