Dr Rowan Williams – The Severn Forum Lecture
The Severn Forum invite you to the first lecture of the year by Bishop Rowan Williams on the Russian Orthodox Church and Politics at the University of Gloucestershire, Cheltenham, GL50 2RH at 7.30pm on Tuesday 14 March.
‘The Long Shadow of “Holy Russia”: the background to the Ukraine Crisis’.
‘Understanding the appalling catastrophe in Ukraine requires us to understand a bit about the history of the region, especially the history of certain persistent ways of thinking about Russia’s special vocation, about the conflicts of East and West played out in Ukraine over the centuries. This talk will attempt to throw some light on this history and its lasting impact.’
Dr Rowan Williams – Baron Williams of Oystermouth, PC, FBA, FRS – was the 104th Archbishop of Canterbury, a position he held from December 2002 to December 2012.
