The Friends of Longhope Church are celebrating their 15th anniversary with a 16 foot angel called Meira.
Inspired by a Church Times article encouraging churches to “shine your light” into communities at Christmas with outside lights and carols, the Friends decided to present the village with this unique Christmas gift.
Meira, meaning “giving light” or “shining” in Hebrew, is now the new centrepiece of the Festival of Angels at All Saints Church. Composed of 5 pieces and adorned in Christmas lights, Meira replaces the annual purchase of a Christmas tree, in a commitment to sustainable practices.
Tina Coull, Chairman of The Friends of Longhope Church, said: “In a bold and brave move, the Friends of Longhope Church decided to create something truly special as a token of gratitude for the wonderful support received over the years.
“Local company M-Tech, based in Coleford and run by Martin, Teresa, and Neil Wyman, accepted the challenge to make an angel for the church.
“Steve Bluett, a dedicated M-Tech fabricator, took on the project of “Angel Maker”. The Friends provided an image and rough overall sizes for the angel, and Steve used his artistic flair to bring the vision to life.”
Meira was transported to the church on 30 November after being weatherproofed with hammerite paint, and was assembled with the help of enthusiastic volunteers. The project received sponsorship from individual donors, primarily from The Friends of Longhope Church committee, church officials, and Longhope PCC.
Tina said: “The Friends of Longhope Church invite everyone to come and embrace the beauty of Meira and celebrate this special occasion with them. This Christmas we celebrate the message of the coming of the angels both in our church decorations and our services.”
