#SaveTheWye – an update from Redbrook Youth Group

Published: Tuesday February 28, 2023

“As youth workers it’s exciting to be able to support young people when they find something they are passionate about and then encourage and empower them to change things.”

Charlotte Butcher, our West Deaneries Youth Connector updates on the work young people are doing to #SaveTheWye in Redbrook.

“In the summer of 2021, a youth group in the Forest of Dean decided that it was time to speak up about an environmental issue that was close to their hearts, and their homes – pollution in the River Wye. Redbrook Youth Group worked hard making a short video about the River Wye and what it means to them.”

“We love the river but currently it’s under great environmental danger causing the local wildlife, habitation and area of outstanding natural beauty to suffer,” the young people wrote in a blog post on their group’s website.

Charlotte adds that “the video was picked up by many national media sources, including the BBC. The young people have been working hard to fight against pollution in their local rover since the video was released. Most recently, they were contacted by producers hoping to create a documentary about the river because of the commitment and passion they show for renewing the Wye to its full beauty. This documentary will highlight the situation of the River Wye and bring awareness of the illegal pollution that happens up and down its banks.”

If you know a story about young people using their voices, and making change by speaking out, in your church/parish we’d love to hear about them and share them with others throughout the diocese.
