What type of body is beach ready?

Thursday, 16 June 2016

The controversial ad campaign, Beach body ready? run by Protein World is being banned across the Transport for London (TfL) network from next month.

The Bishop of Gloucester, the Right Revd Rachel Treweek welcomed this decision. She said, “Women, especially young girls, will face enough self-esteem issues in their life, without the pressure of advertising, which claim that being the perfect woman means you have to look a certain way with a certain shape.

“I want young women to be encouraged to discover who they are as a whole person and to delight in that. So much of what they experience through social media and advertising presents a message of value based on physical appearance. This often leads to low self-esteem which can result in mental health issues. I believe that we need to start speaking out about this issue.”

The Children’s Society’s most recent research* into young people’s well-being, found body image and the effects of advertising on young girls' mental health and well-being to be recurring themes; further research found that girls in England ranked bottom in terms of happiness with their body confidence, appearance and self-confidence, compared to girls in the other 14 countries surveyed, with the exception of South Korea.**
