Many readers will know that the Diocese of Gloucester is part of the West Midlands Regional Racial Justice Initiative – a bold collaboration between the Dioceses of Birmingham, Coventry, Hereford, Lichfield, Worcester and Gloucester. Born out of the Church of England’s landmark 2021 report From Lament to Action, this regional partnership seeks to turn reflection into transformation, tackling racial injustice and embedding equity at the heart of church life.
After a period of restructuring and renewal, the Initiative is once again gaining momentum, supporting work that responds to the particular needs and opportunities within each diocese. Here in Gloucester, that energy is already bearing fruit:
- Earlier this month, eight delegates from our Diocese took part in a powerful 24-hour racial justice retreat, deepening understanding and commitment.
- In partnership with Lives of Colour, we shall soon be hosting a regional gathering for youth and children’s workers at the Cathedral, creating space to share stories and strengthen inclusion.
- A new steering group is championing racial justice among children and young people, helping all communities feel at home in our churches.
- Up to 52 days of community development work will be available to parishes between now and June 2026, supporting local growth and engagement.
- Microgrants ranging from £200 to £1,500 will be open to worshipping communities eager to take practical steps towards racial justice.

Since the Initiative’s launch in May 2024, I have had the privilege of serving as its Chair – a role I have now passed to Dawn Brathwaite of the Diocese of Birmingham. Our diocesan representatives, the Revd Canon Ann Sargent and Canon Alexandra Dyer, continue to serve on the Board, and would be delighted to hear from anyone with ideas, questions, or a desire to get involved.
As we mark Black History Month, this work reminds us that racial justice is not a one-month theme but a year-round calling – to ensure that the story of the Church is one in which every voice, every heritage, and every heart truly belongs.
The Very Revd Andrew Zhini, Dean of Gloucester
