A detailed LEGO model of Gloucester Cathedral is now on display at the Cathedral.
It is constructed from around 13,500 individual bricks, and measures at 90cm wide, 60cm deep and 60cm tall.
It was built by Josh Hicks, Gloucester Cathedral’s Visitor Operations Officer, who began building the model in January.
He said: “The idea started around five years ago when I was given a LEGO Star Wars set for my 30th birthday. I was obsessed with LEGO as a child, but I stopped playing with it during my teenage years and even sold my collection.
“The gift got me back into building again. I started collecting parts and sorting through bulk LEGO. I wanted to create what’s known as a ‘MOC’ – my own creation, and I thought of the idea to build the Cathedral.”
Although it only represents half of the Cathedral, it includes key architectural features such as the nave, tower, fan vaulting, windows, and tower.
Josh said: “I began by trial-building sections using mixed-colour bricks, to work out the structure. Then I ordered the correct parts in tan colour to match the Cathedral’s stonework. I started with features like the pillars and fan vaulting, and built around those.”
Josh has an Instagram account where he shares progress on his designs. He has nearly finished designing a small, 50 piece Gloucester Cathedral kit, as well as a bigger version of around 400 pieces.
“I’m hoping to turn these into kits to sell. I have plans to produce boxes and printed instructions, and then sell them in the future to raise money for the next part of the LEGO Cathedral model,” he said.
“LEGO is made up of small, individual parts, like the Church. You bring them together to create something bigger than yourself, and you build something that lasts.”
All are welcome to view the LEGO Gloucester Cathedral model, which is on display just inside the porch near the welcome area of Gloucester Cathedral. It will remain on display until the first week of September.
