Naftali with a group of childrenOur partner Diocese of Western Tanganyika brought together more than a thousand children for a five-day Christian camp that blended learning, worship and fellowship. Initially planned for 900 participants, the camp exceeded expectations and welcomed 1,122 children aged 7 to 14 from across the area.

The camp’s theme centred on love, drawing on teachings from Genesis 4:9 and from the calling of Simon Peter in Luke chapter 5. There were worship, singing, and group activities.

Around 200 teachers volunteered to run and supervise the camp. They taught classes that ranged from compassion to English, and some of the children prepared lessons of their own to teach. They all slept in the church each night which turned it into a lively shared space.

“When we first planned this, it seemed like a lot to plan and organise,” said Naftali Nkika, Head of Christian Education for DWT. “We had to think about food, accommodation for the children, preparing good lessons, and how to financially achieve all of this.

“However, everything worked out. Every child was so happy and they formed strong friendships.

“Many children travelled long distances to get to and from the camp. Transport was organised and funded by the diocese and, in some cases, by local pastors. We encouraged the children to return home eager to share testimonies and lessons with their families,” Naftali said.

Though Bishop Emmanuel was unable to attend, the vicar opened the camp and led services.

“For the children, it was like a tour. It was really special for them, they will never forget that experience. Camps like these are so important. The more we teach, the more they grow.”
