Christian Aid launches guide to help engage with local MPs

Published: Friday August 2, 2024

Christian Aid has put together a guide called Breaking Bread to help you and your church engage with local MPs.

As newly elected MPs are settling in to their Parliamentary seats across the country, Christian Aid is calling on people to forge relations and start conversations with their UK Government representatives.

The Breaking Bread guide includes videos explaining what Christian Aid is asking of the UK Government – to put peace first, to fund climate justice, and to cancel the debts of low income countries.

Supporters can sign up for Act on Poverty workshops and Faith in Action sessions, to learn more about the issues in the UK and globally, and how to engage with MPs.

They can also download crib sheets with key facts and a guide full of hints and tips to help you and your church get off to a good start.

A message from Christian Aid about Breaking Bread

By inviting your newly elected MP into church to break bread you could spark a connection which could last for years to come.

The everyday act and symbolism of sharing food with strangers appears in many parts of the Bible; Jesus frequently shared bread with those he encountered and befriended – and as the central act of the Last Supper, the breaking of bread is imbued with special significance for Christians. He often sat and ate with people, many of whom disagreed with them.

It is an act of Christian witness to reach out and speak to those who represent us, to act on poverty.

It’s a symbol of welcome, hospitality, care, openness, and peace. In breaking bread, we build and strengthen our relationships. And the humblest of meals – even a cup of tea and biscuits – can help build relationships.

Your church can be a powerful vehicle for change. Together, we are stronger, and MPs and other people in powerful positions are more likely to engage with an active, graceful community than with any individual.
